Gaia Rising
Brian Mock, 2022
Gaia Rising was our first commission, it was a big moment for us. I first saw Brian’s work in Boston, a sculpture of Paul Revere at the hotel where I was staying. I was enamored with the intricacy of the found objects that were assembled to create the larger design.
We began following his work on Instagram and it grew on us. We loved the recycled materials. His work fit the theme of appearing to be one thing from further away and totally different detail up close.
We reached out about a commission. We generally like to let the artist drive the design with minimal interference, so the only guidance we gave him was that we particularly liked his work around human forms, and that the name of the property was “Chaos.”
He was booked up over a year out, so there was plenty of time to work on the siting. We decided that we wanted the work to overlook the vineyard and created a purpose-built patio where it would live. We even removed some rows.
When he completed the piece, it was perfect. A female figure arising out of chaos.
It remains one of our favorites in the collection and one that we enjoy seeing daily since it is up near the house.
