Brian Mock, 2022
Gaia Rising was our first commission, a big moment for us. I'd seen Brian's work once before, a sculpture of Paul Revere outside a hotel in Boston, and couldn't get over the intricacy of the found objects he'd assembled into it.
We started following him on Instagram and the work kept growing on us. The recycled materials, the way a piece read as one thing from a distance and something entirely different up close.
When we reached out about a commission, we gave him almost nothing to go on. We like to let artists drive the design, so the only brief was that we loved his human forms, and that the property was called "Chaos."
He was booked over a year out, which gave us time to think about siting. We wanted the piece to overlook the vineyard, so we built a patio for it and pulled out a few rows to make room.
What he came back with was exactly right: a female figure rising out of chaos.
It's still one of our favorites. Close enough to the house that we see it every day.
